The Montgomery County Fair and Rodeo is an annual celebration of the youth of Texas that features entertainment, education, food, and fun. With over $2 million in scholarships raised for high school students in Montgomery County, and events ranging from rodeos to cook-offs to agricultural robotics shows, it’s no wonder that this Texan event is beloved by locals and out-of-town visitors alike. Let us take you on a tour of the fair and rodeo!

Youth Events

At the Montgomery County Fair & Rodeo, the students of Montgomery County take the spotlight. With a range of events designed to inspire, encourage, and showcase their talents, the fair is a true testament to just what kids can do.

For those who love agriculture and animal husbandry, the junior livestock shows are a highlight of the fair. Young participants show off heifers, turkeys, lambs, rabbits, and goats for judging, aiming for the title of Grand Champion. The grand finale of these shows is the Junior Livestock Auction, where top performers in the livestock shows have the chance to get a sale slot.

But it's not just about livestock at the Montgomery County Fair & Rodeo – there are also opportunities for kids and teens to showcase their artistic and mechanical skills. From fine art and needlecraft to horticulture and agricultural mechanics, there are plenty of opportunities for young creators to show their skills. These exhibits are later auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the young artists and builders. For budding grill masters, there's the KIDZQ Contest, a junior BBQ cook-off event that lets young chefs showcase their skills on the grill. Throughout the live competition, students can impress judges with their culinary creations.

Rodeo Action

If you’re seeking adrenaline-pumping action, head to the rodeo events! From youth rodeos to professional competitions, spectators can see top-notch talent showcasing their skills in bull riding, barrel racing, and more. The ranch rodeo is a highlight, offering a unique glimpse into the world of real working cowboys as teams compete in challenges reflecting the duties on a ranch.

The professional rodeo event, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, gives pros a chance to showcase their skills in bull riding, barrel racing, roping, and bronc riding. At the team roping event, the residents of Montgomery County strut their stuff, with the winners moving on to compete again in the Best of Montgomery County Team Roping Championship.

Even kids can get in on the rodeo fun! Fan-favorite events mutton busting and calf scramble give the little ones a chance to participate. Mutton busting is a junior version of a rodeo, with kids competing to see who can stay on sheepback the longest, while calf scramble is a chaotic delight as 15 calves are released into the arena for 30 kids to chase and attempt to catch.

Food, Food, Food!

The Montgomery County Fair & Rodeo is not just about rodeo rides, entertainment, and livestock shows; it's also a celebration for food lovers. From mouthwatering BBQ to savory chili, the fair's food events are sure to satisfy your cravings.

One of the highlights of the fair is the Busch Light BBQ Cook-Off, where teams from across the county showcase their skills on the grill. With categories including brisket, ribs, chicken, and dessert, there are plenty of ways for competitors to vie for the prestigious title of BBQ champion. Attendees are treated to a smorgasbord of delectable dishes, ranging from perfectly smoked brisket to finger-licking ribs. Every bite bursts with the flavors of Texas. The competition is fierce, but competitors and spectators alike can bond over a shared love of delicious BBQ.

For those who prefer their food with a spicy kick, the from-scratch chili cook-off is not to be missed. Teams come together to create pots of mouthwatering chili from scratch, utilizing their own secret recipes and special ingredients. From traditional Texas-style chili to creative variations with unique twists, there's something for every chili aficionado to enjoy. As attendees sample the different entries, they'll be treated to a symphony of flavors, from bold spices to rich, hearty textures. And the best part? All proceeds from the chili cook-off go to the MCFA Scholarship Fund, continuing the mission to support Montgomery County's youth.
